RiskChallenger Experience Day - "Safety & Security" Edition
On Thursday, November 16, 2023, we organized the third edition of the RiskChallenger Experience Day. This time around, the theme was Safety & Security. Over 40 participants from different organizations gathered at Leerhotel het Klooster in Amersfoort.
Developments and ambitions of RiskChallenger
The Kruisherenzaal of Leerhotel het Klooster hosted the third edition of the RiskChallenger Experience Day. We began the day with an update on RiskChallenger. We reviewed the developments made this year and presented the plans and expectations we have in stock for 2024. We also demonstrated the brand-new brainstorm module in the RiskChallenger app, giving guests the opportunity to try it out and provide feedback.
Serge Buitenhuis on risk management within Safety and Security
This edition of the RiskChallenger Experience Day featured two external speakers from the field who spoke about Safety & Security risk management from their perspectives. The first speaker was Serge Buitenhuis. With 12 years of operational police experience and 12 years of international safety & security experience, he shared insights into recent safety & security incidents. These incidents illustrated the challenges of assessing risks. Serge discussed the foundations of a new risk assessment approach to break the classic risk spiral.
Serge’s view on risk management aligns with RiskChallenger’s view of how to improve risk management in this market. He described the importance of communicative and proactive risk management in the Safety and Security industry. Lately, organizations are faced with more dynamic risks that require communication. It is important to look for uncertainties and translate them into discussable risks.
Another important aspect that Serge put emphasis on is to interactively include the correct internal and external stakeholders when discussing risks. Multiple perspectives can aid the proper identification of risks and their affiliated measures. Classic or reactive risk management is not enough in these current dynamic times. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to trends and phenomena and improve the detection of “early warners”. By discussing risks and looking into “early warners”, risks can be mitigated in a more efficient way.
Remco Reijm on risk management in control rooms
After dinner, Remco Reijm took the floor. With a background in the IT sector and 10 years of experience in the control room world, he brought the audience more insights into this domain. In 2020, he and two associates founded NenovaIT to address issues within the control room industry. At the RiskChallenger Experience Day, he discussed the role of risk management in control rooms and how it can contribute to monitoring and adjusting measures. He also talked about developments and trends within the control room, possible improvements, and what the future may hold. Here the joint discussion of risks is in development.
Interactive workshop from RiskChallenger
Finally, Harry Steenwijk from RiskChallenger conducted an interactive workshop, drawing conclusions from both presentations by Serge Buitenhuis and Remco Reijm. In groups of 2-3 people, participants represented one stakeholder in a fictitious situation. This exercise highlighted the importance of being interactive, integral, and proactive in risk management.
The day ended with drinks and the opportunity for everyone to network. Looking back, the third RiskChallenger Experience Day was a success, thanks to the input from everyone who attended. We were able to give everyone the latest news on RiskChallenger updates both on corporate and software developments and thanks to Serge and Remco we dove deeper into why risk management is important in Safety and Security. Many thanks the to participants and speakers who made the RiskChallenger Experience Day a great success. We hope to see you all at the next edition!
